a. Mode A (Normal Communications). When you are operating in a satellite communications link where no
threat of pulse jamming or antenna outage exists, set the controls on your encoder-decoder as shown in table 2-8. If your
encoder-decoder is located at the transmit end of the communications link, the ENCODER MODE select switch should be
set to the A position. If your encoder-decoder is located at the receive end of the communication link, the DECODER
MODE select switch should be set to the A position. If you are transmitting and receiving information, both the ENCODER
MODE select switch and the DECODER MODE SELECT switch should be set to the A position. For proper operation, the
encoder-decoder at the transmit end of the communications link must have the ENCODER MODE select switch set to the
A position and the encoder-decoder at the receive end of the communications link must have the DECODER MODE select
switch set to the A position.

Test Operation. The encoder-decoder can also be used for checking the quality of the communications link from
end to end (Link Test) and for checking the operation of the encoder-decoder (Self Test). The operating procedures for
these tests are described in paragraph 2-6.
