GLOSSARY
A unit of measure for rate of data transmission. One baud
Baud
equals one bit per second.
A single occurrence of a symbol in a language employing two
Bit
distinct kind of symbols.
A device which converts digital data to a dc level signal
Converter
form so it can be transmitted. Also receives dc level
signals and converts them to digital data so that data can
be processed by a computer system.
Miniature rocker type switch used to modify configuration
Dip Switch
of circuit boards.
Duplex 4-wire transmission that permits simultaneous
Full Duplex
communication between two devices in both directions.
A duplex operation which can operate in either direction,
Half Duplex
but not simultaneously.
A point or device at which a transition between media,
Interface
power levels, modes of operation, etc., is made.
A mark is the opposite state of space.
Mark
An EIA standard for wiring interface to connect printers,
RS-232C
terminals and modems to a computer system.
Programs, routines, codes and other written information
Software
used to provide instructions to a computer.
A space is the opposite state of mark.
Space
Metallic lines which have no inductance (loading coils) to
Unloaded Lines
reduce transmission loss.  Loading is not used on open
wire, since it tends to decrease transmission stability of
this type of circuit.
