b.  Encoder-Decoder Application-Characteristics. As shown in figure 1-5, two encoder-decoders are needed to
complete a satellite communications link. The encoder portion of the modem accepts data from the data source,
conditions the data, and then sends the data to the KY-883 encoder at the transmit end of the link. The convolutional
encoder adds redundancy to the data stream. Additionally, the encoded data is interleaved to provide the necessary burst
error protection. At the receive end, the KY-883 decoder uses this redundancy to correct almost all errors that were
introduced by the channel.
